Great writing can really strike me in just a few ways. You can agree with my world view so much that it makes me feel less alone. You can disagree with me so assuredly, that it makes me challenge my own beliefs. And you can surprise me, and find ways to ask questions that would never have occurred to me, and make me realize that I still have so much to learn and see in this world. Jeff Beach’s debut book, Thai Light, is of the third kind. Somewhere between the twists of life, love and learning he manages to show that there are straight roads of meaning and belief. These roads cut across time, culture, sex, and money and sometimes it takes a new path to find them. The book keeps opening my eyes with each page and shows me whole new kinds of colors and ideas. He makes me want to go there, not to Thailand particularly, but wherever one goes to get eyes opened so stirringly.

Jeff Beach's stunning debut novel, Thai Light: A Controversial & Sensual Romance, is the New Millennium's Catcher in the Rye. Beach brings the reader an intimate, engrossing, and unfettered coming of age tale. Set in rural Thailand, a Peace Corps volunteer finds himself in conflicting and powerful roles: female savior, surrogate father, and sex god. The tension, excitement, and emotional complexity of the hero is palpable, as quests for equality and enlightenment confront an outdated culture. --Ray Hamel, Publishing Executive

Move over Fifty Shades! Thai Light has all of that and more. Author Jeff Beach takes you on a journey that is intellectual as well as sensual. I have rarely read a book that has the ability to stimulate so many parts of my brain and evoke so many different emotions. From serious to funny to erotic…sometimes in one sentence, this book had me thinking about everything from life in Thailand to how to be a better person in my daily life. Not only a journey for the author…but one for the reader as well. I found myself missing Phoebe and Jim as soon as I finished the book. I wonder where they are now? And mostly I wonder when the next book will hit the shelves! Awesome debut! Bravo!

The open-eyed honesty of the main character as he explores a new chapter in his life as a Peace Corps volunteer in Thailand, and also explores himself--his past mistakes, his weaknesses and his joys--aroused my interest and compassion. The episodes of intimacy are explicit (almost too much so for my taste), but are an integral part of the character's development of insights and hopes and accomplishments as a man who respects the struggles and dignity of others who have it tougher than him: school children living with aspirations despite poverty and sometimes abuse, women caught in less than liberating circumstances, and his own past self, a bruised victim of unwise habits and choices who continues to daily inform him as he heals and strengthens. Encountering a character this honest and utterly void of cynicism makes for a refreshing read.

Such sensual and poetic prose!! Truly a 5 star debut! For me eroticism begins with great writing.
In THAI LIGHT, the author manages to convey the feel, sight, sounds and smells of Thailand most uniquely and his insight into the culture is fascinating and enlightening. I learned so much while being greatly entertained!
The adventure of Jim tickles my mind even now. There is so much packed in such a small book! What a country for metaphysics, philosophy, pro feminist, pro humanitarian and pro Gaia views to play out in!!
I look forward to the next book eagerly! Keep me informed!

The descriptive exploits of Jim borders on porn, but I couldn't put the book down. The brutal honesty in which the intimacy is described was shocking at first. But now I want to meet Phoebe and Wanida!!

This book, THAI LIGHT, absorbed me right from the start because of the narrator's honesty and humor. Then, as I got further into it, Jim's (the narrator) relationships, thoughts and issues grew deeper, the humor got funnier, and the writing--some of the situations and images are absolutely spellbinding--was amazing! This cumulative, moving account (even though a disclaimer says it's fiction, I'll bet a lot of it is true) totally enthralled me, not to mention, IT STANDS UP FOR WOMEN!!
I recommend it to everyone (over 17)!

Thai Light is one of the best novels I've ever read. Serious, funny, sexy, compelling and exotic. It stimulated both my mind and my body. I recommend this book to anyone who is feeling romantic, seeking thought provoking concepts, or just needs some adventure in an exotic jungle location. A heartbreaking work of pathos and cultural scrutiny. Buy it yesterday!
