Kellan Quirke's freedom is ripped away from him when at the age of fifteen he is forcefully conscripted into the Trash Corps, an army of laborers controlled by the Colonial military. With the help of his new friends and some very special mushrooms, he learns to become a true leader. More
SevenCity is a gleaming jewel of Colonial ingenuity and culture on the untamed, wilderness moon of Foraois. It is the living, breathing, link between the small moon and the Colonial home world, Domus, but for the people of Foraois, the city may as well be a malignant tumor. Like so many of his people before him, Kellan Quirke, a young “Homesteader” and native of Foraois is dragged from his home at the age of fifteen by the Colonials. Two black bars are tattooed onto his forehead and he is thrown head first into the living nightmare that is the Trash Corps.
Kellan is confronted with a brutal new reality. He is no longer considered a human being. He and his fellow Trash Corps recruits are tossed into a four year meat grinder of forced labor and subjugation. The Colonial Security Forces that watch over their camp are barbaric, but the culture of his fellow recruits and of the Trash Corps itself is equally shocking. Kellan and his wise-cracking bunkmate Gilroy Flynn, along with their tight knit group of friends battle exhaustion, persecution, and violent death at every turn. Their aim is to simply survive, but life in SevenCity and the Trash Corps proves to be anything but simple.
Fighting through his conscription, jockeying with the fearsome head of the camp, and finding himself in unlikely friendships with the Colonials that he is supposed to hate, Kellan’s deepest held beliefs are shattered. When he discovers the presence of an illicit miracle drug sweeping through the city, finds the truth behind an ancient species of blue mushroom, and learns of an immense machine buried beneath SevenCity, freedom for himself and his people seems closer than ever. But ultimately it is the connection between those three and the help of a brilliant and tenacious Colonial girl, Saanvi Manavendra, which ignites the explosive revolution.
