"Sands of Retribution” is a novel that takes place over a period of approximately fourteen years finishing in 2010.
Barbara Lee is a young student at the University of Virginia who has her world turned upside down with the death of her parents one winter. With the help from friends and a dashing middle-eastern man named Hakim she moves on with her life, eventually marrying him and moving to Washington DC.
Hakim starts to have personal issues and spends a lot of time at the local mosque and life in their home becomes strained. Then during a surprise visit to his parents, he informs Barbara that they are staying permanently in Saudi Arabia and that she must become a dutiful Saudi wife. She is renamed Quismah.
The next 5 years prove a misery for Quismah who suffers mental abuse from the family and physical abuse from Hakim, while bearing him a daughter and then a son. She decides to escape but at the last minute is forced to leave her two year old son behind.
A frenzied chase in the desert ensues, and she is rescued by a helicopter patrol team and turned over to the US consul in Kuwait. She is given a new identity and with her daughter is repatriated to the US where she settles in northern California, eventually meeting and marrying a successful dot com lawyer.
Hakim has vowed vengeance on her and tracks down the US consul who assisted Barbara and captures his family and holds them hostage to force him to provide information on her resettlement. The consul provides the information but his family does not survive the incident.
Hakim then plants interlopers into Barbara’s new life, both covertly and as friends. Slowly a pattern of incidents and personal trials assail the family and the seemingly idyllic life that they have created starts to fall apart.
Fuad the son she left behind in Arabia has grown into a young man now, and his father brings him into the plot as he brings it to a climax aiming to punish Barbara, and teach her the true meaning of respect for a Saudi husband. He meticulously plans his retribution and it comes to a crux in the family home in Alamo California.
The final showdown has an unexpected twist that tips the balance of the scales, and finally gives Barbara the opportunity for her own and final retribution.
Fuad escapes with his own destiny becoming clearer, and a taste for vengeance in his mouth.
