The gargoyle, Samuel, a guardian of River City, watches a young boy steal someone's social security money. Samuel doesn't get involved in mortals' affairs, but it bothers him. Then the boy breaks into the cathedral that Samuel calls home. Not something Samuel can overlook. When he nabs the kid, he realizes he's not totally mortal. He's a shifter, and Samuel can't place his scent, so he hauls the boy to his friend Ally's apartment and calls his fellow gargoyle, Dante, to decide what to do. They discover the boy and his mother are being hunted. They're running for their lives. More, Ally discovers that she has blood ties to the two, and she's determined to protect them.
