Born in the undersea city of Acheron, Rafa’il transports often ilegal cargo between cities for a fee. Unable to connect with others, Rafa’il was plagued by loneliness until he discovered the drug called “ana.” Now in addition to avoiding law enforcement and legitimate transporter agencies, Rafa’il struggles with the threat of addiction. The surface of the earth has been rendered uninhabitable, and humanity has taken refuge in a network of cities entirely enclosed within undersea habitats. Society is organized into a caste system in which people are classified not only by their IQ but also by which particular type of intelligence they manifest most prominently. Rafa’il is a social misfit whose IQ scores place him in the lower class. He makes a living as a “freeporter”: a freelance transporter who gets things where they need to be and doesn’t ask questions…as long as the price is right. Unable to establish connections with others and haunted by a loveless childhood, Rafa’il struggles to make ends meet while avoiding both harassment by the legitimate transporter agencies that he’s shunned and arrest by law enforcement due to his ever-increasing involvement with the criminal underworld.
