The surface of the earth has been rendered uninhabitable, and humanity has taken refuge in a network of cities entirely enclosed within undersea habitats. Society is organized into a caste system in which people are classified not only by their IQ but also by which particular type of intelligence they manifest most prominently. Rafa’il is a social misfit whose IQ scores place him in the lower class. He makes a living as a “freeporter”: a freelance transporter who gets things where they need to be and doesn’t ask questions…as long as the price is right. Unable to establish connections with others and haunted by a loveless childhood, Rafa’il struggles to make ends meet while avoiding both harassment by the legitimate transporter agencies that he’s shunned and arrest by law enforcement due to his ever-increasing involvement with the criminal underworld.
