Short description

This is a book about youth, and vandalism, and first love. It’s about the sacrifices we make to get a job in a recession, and the miles we travel to find meaning in our lives. It’s about spending whole summers with your friends, wishing you were an adult, and when you do grow up, wondering how the time flew by. But mostly, it’s about a little boy named Charlie, and the story he’s about to tell.

Extended description

The First Boy Who Was Broken is a coming of age novel, a romance, and a tragedy. It is a time capsule of generation Y, and it explores the triumphs and trials of just what it means to grow up in America.

Charlie is a typical boy. He has 3 best friends, he's never left his small town, and he has an incredible story that's about to unfold. The First Boy Who Was Broken follows Charlie and his classmates as they grow from children to adults. It follows them through the enthrallment of first love, and the pangs of friends who die too young. It explores their lives as they attempt to pull off the perfect high school prank, and as they face the difficult decisions of leaving home to find work in a bad recession.

But in the end, it's Charlie's story. The story of an American boy who enjoys the unbreakable bonds of childhood friendship, and who as an adult, must come to terms with the difficult concepts of independence, saying good bye to loved ones, and even vengeance.

What a fresh voice! Unique in both style and narration, this poetically beautiful book is reminiscent of Alice Sebold's "The Lovely Bones", told with the same grace as "The Virgin Suicides". This quick and lovely novel will draw you in and keep you hungry for more. Definitely worth the read.

(I am eagerly awaiting the next work this author makes available, I'm sure you will be too)

I loved this book and could not put it down. If you are looking for a good story, this is it. The author has such a great way with words. The title is a little off-putting but the story moves along pretty quickly. I will look for other works by this author.
