Amelia Hartliss is a secret agent who doesn't have to like the jobs she's given, or the people she has to deal with. But when she's required to act as bodyguard to the most hateful man in England, the Editor of the worst, most destestable and gutter serving tabloid newspaper in the realm, her stomach churns. Fleeing bombs and bullets, she drives him off in a small car and finds herself away from the beaten track, lying low in cheap hotels and friend's houses on the back roads and country lanes of northern England. The only bright spot in the whole tense adventure is that she is also forced to take on another passenger, a tabloid reader with vengeance in his heart, who has sworn revenge on the grubby Editor. The young man happens to be the most handsome man she has ever met. He is charming company and an interesting companion, but the tale he has to tell relates one of the most horrific experiences she has ever heard.
