Jake was so close—too close. I smelled his cologne—a wistful wild scent threaded with musk and leather. I didn’t even know I was trembling until his hand traveled down my chin to the curve of my neck, where he brushed a loose strand of hair away in an almost absentminded gesture. I wanted him at that moment, more than I’d ever wanted a man in my entire life. My sex flared into life, throbbing with the aching need for him. My heart pattered so quickly I could feel its beat drumming a hard tattoo of sound through my chest.

I raised my head, my lips parted as I found his eyes with mine and fell into their warm depths. The eye contact seemed to startle him, to break the magical reverie we both had managed to fall into. Jake pulled back, uncertainty plain in his posture. He reached up to tug at a cap that wasn’t there before giving me a rueful smile.

“I almost forgot,” Jake muttered, as if reaffirming something to himself. He shook his head. “I just need you to not speak of my—um—moonlighting adventures to anyone. And we’ll talk tonight over dinner.”

I startled. “You still want to get dinner?”

Jake grinned, lending a mischievous glint to his features. “You’re not getting off that easily, Miss Garmen. I told you no takebacks. I’ll pick you up at seven. Wear something nice.”

And then he was gone—striding through the door before I could respond—leaving me to pant and clutch white knuckled at the wooden desk. I reached up and touched my hair where he had pushed it back. His scent still lingered in the room—a fading reminder of the complete craziness of the last few minutes. I ached and pulsed in all the wrong places, my body rebelling against my mind as I struggled to retain some semblance of my sanity. I had no idea what was going on—I was lost in a tempest of such proportions my mind and body seemed to have stopped completely.
