Short description

The road was blurred enough by the snow. The misty figure was nearly covered by it, his tracks almost immediately obscured by the weight of pure white dust. For the last couple of miles, she had been trying to balance the heater against the defroster, making sure the windows did not fog up while she was trying to keep warm. She needed to be warm. Her hands shook on the wheel. If it were not for the fact that the wind wanted to blow her off of the road she could have let go for a little while and wrung the ice out of them.

The camping trip was supposed to have been a fun excursion, a nice weekend out, but they had not even gotten to the first bottle of champagne before she had left. If Eli hadn't mentioned that... She punched the radio button, hoping to channel her frustration into it, but her arm only limply flicked at it, sending a flood of sad plaintive notes into the car. It was their favorite radio station, she thought, and the well of tears sought to completely block her vision.

A swarm of bats flew into her windshield with a thunk. She swerved to try and get out of the way, but the bats exploded, body parts popping out of the remains.

“What the hell what that?” the girl said quietly. She opened the window. The smell of chill winter air did not bear any telling news. Her windshield was smeared with blood. She bit her lip and opened up the car door. She shook off her high heels and grabbed a pair of boots from the back seat.

The girl pulled nervously at the little skin around her nose before sniffing bravely and tip-toeing, as elegantly as she could manage in the too-large boots, towards the black shape on the road.

“Oh my God!” She screamed, “I think I’m going to throw up.”

On the ground, a body lay, shattered into pieces. If she were to believe her eyes, she would have seen a stray arms working its way back to the torso as a dazed head became reattached to the body. She paused to retch and then put her hand in her pocket for her phone.

“Hello? 911?”
