"The Souls of Black Folks' Style" was written for young students in order to further assist in increasing their word power by using vintage African American photography to define "big words", as in its predecessor, "The Souls of Young Black Folks", and still inspired by Dr. W.E.B. DuBois' book, "The Souls of Black Folk" with its constant use of mammoth words. Unlike "The Souls of Young Black Folks" which is a short dictionary, "The Souls of Black Folks' Style" is a type of thesaurus which uses more than one "big word" to describe each of the subjects of the pictures selected from Dr. DuBois'collection assembled for the Paris Exposition of 1900. The reading of the words should flow easily because they were fashioned into an extensive poem. With few exceptions, the anonymous subjects are photographed half-length, but the words can be defined by looking at their fashions, their facial expressions, and in a few instances, their hair.
