When idealistic nurse Adrienne Cody tries to help the crippled son of Julie Moran, a high-society prostitute with friends in too many places, the two women form an unlikely bond. But when Adrienne witnesses the murder of a prominent gambler, she believes Julie set her up in order to shield her own involvement. Adrienne falls for the detective investigating the case, the handsome and debonair Jack Gallagher. Yet she soon learns that not only is "Honey Jack" the brass-knuckled enforcer for his family of grafting Irish cops, he also happens to be Julie's lover. Worse, he almost certainly killed the gambler himself -- and her evidence could hang him. As Adrienne finds herself pursued by thugs on both sides of the law, she comes to believe that Julie's son holds the key to the bloody war breaking out for control of Seattle's notorious red-light district. And both her survival and the boy's depend on whether to trust Jack, or take her evidence to the DA.
