I have a PhD in statistics and have taught at Harvard, Yale, and the University of Pennsylvania. I began looking at the Hebrew Bible when I retired. There is a technique for identifying the author of written material based on the frequencies of non-contextual words, such as "with", "and", "therefore". This has been used to identify the authors of the disputed Federalist Papers, the works attributed to Davey Crockett, and literary critics of the 18th Century who wrote under pseudonyms. Could these techniques be applied to a highly inflected language like Hebrew? Using passages of post-Biblical Hebrew with known authors, I was able to identify 13 non-contextual words that could be used to identify different authors. I applied this statistical tool to almost all the books of the Hebrew Bible, identifying 76 different authors.
