I lived for a year in Indonesia and fell in love with the people, the language, and the culture. The Indonesians value their spirit of refinement and call it being halus. For most or all of their lives, they go about their genteel lives immersed in their culture, their art, and their land, until something or somebody causes them to snap. Almost every American knows one Indonesian word, amok, as in to run amok. While few people are as cultured and halus as the Indonesians, they are unmatched when it comes to running amok. When an Indonesian man has had enough, when he has lost his job, when he has lost his house, when he can no longer provide for his family, he takes his curvy-bladed Keris and runs screaming into the street slashing and killing until he himself is killed.
