Short description

Adventurers aid an aging bard discover what went wrong on a mission seven years ago that cost the lives of his former comrades and assisted a clever queen in her 'conquest' of his homeland. The challenge is complicated by betrayal from within, the death of nearly everyone who might have held the bard's answers, and the pending slaughter of the most worthy warriors of the realm.

Extended description

Liarry of Westlake, an aging bard and once member of The Crossed Blades adventuring band has returned from an extended period of study to find his group's base of operations in ruins and his former comrades slaughtered. Most were slain in a failed mission seven years ago escorting a young female noble to her wedding - a wedding destined to unite the baronies of the Marches against the threat of Queen Anne of Twin Peaks and her armies! The secrecy of the route to be taken points to a betrayal from within the Blades' ranks.
The minstrel has hired a young adventuring group, who call themselves The Flametongues to unravel the mystery surrounding the failure of his fallen comrades in their final mission and, if possible, to help thwart the Queen's machinations against the Marches. Assassins, an old ally turned foe, Queen Anne's cleverness, and the death of nearly anyone who could assist in these endeavors are not all that stand in the way of the Liarry and his new allies.

Finally! As one of those lucky people who has had the immense pleasure of enjoying Lee McCormick's story telling skills for years, it is wonderful to see him get something into print. Feelings of trepidation are always present when one endeavors to read the written work of someone they know. Will it be good? What will I say to the author? It should come as no surprise to anyone who knows Lee, that From the Ruins satisfies on all levels. There are a host of well defined characters, the plot is engaging, and the combat scenes are well rendered. I would definitely recommend Lee's first work to anyone who enjoys a good yarn and will begin the nagging for his next.
