EXCERPT
I woke tied to a tree in my original enclosure, my hands secured above my head.

“I’ve been thinking about what you said.” The psycho doctor was back. What did he want now? “You were right about using a human control in my experiment.”

He was the only other human there. “And then I can leave?”

He came right up to me and placed his hand low on my belly. “Not yet.” He stroked the skin there and I tried to wriggle away from him.

“We need to see this through to the end.” If only he wasn’t so sinister. He had such beautiful light-brown eyes and square-jawed good looks that you didn’t often see in a laboratory.

“The end?”

“First, we see which subject wins the sperm wars, then we wait for gestation to run its course.” He unfastened his belt as he spoke and unzipped his trousers.

“Gestation? That’s nine months.”

“Maybe.” He stood a hair’s breadth away from me. “It depends on the father.”

I leaned away from him, balancing on the tips of my toes. He took me by the waist and put me back in place.

“If it were the human subject, then yes, that would be nine months.” Staring into my eyes, he spread my legs with his knee.
