So now it’s up to Sol, descendant of King Solomon, the original daemon wrangler, to break the curse on his beloved. And to do that, he’ll have to become a sorcerer himself, maybe the greatest sorcerer ever. He’ll need Rob’s help, of course, as well as that of his faithful sidekick Celia – who just may be the descendant of the Queen of Sheba –and his dog Gary, once Sol learns how to understand, if not speak, Dog. But daemons are a dangerous lot, and Sol’s experiments with the power may unleash and unlock more things under the earth than just Rob…

“So you’re a demon.”

“That’s one word for it. An entity. Spelled d-a-e-m-o-n it’s accurate, more so than the Judeo-Christian spelling.”

“But you have a sigil, and light hurts you, and you can be bound, and all that shit.”

Rob nodded. “It’s complicated, but yeah, the more time you spend on earth, in mortal form, the more the rules apply that men make about you, around you. All kinds of rules,” he said mysteriously. “The light didn’t used to hurt me. And won’t again someday, I hope.”

I got up. “Show me something. Show me something for sure that will prove I am not on drugs and you are not crazy and that this is real.”

“Okay.” And he raised his arms.

Snow seems a very peaceful element, soft and friendly, but you should know better. Snow is very heavy because it is made of water, lots of water, and when it moves you want to watch out. The black diamond slope above us cracked, the sound anyone who’s been in the mountains long enough knows is the sound of an avalanche. There’s no way, I thought insanely, this is a groomed slope and this does not happen.

It was, and it wasn’t. The snow broke loose, and began to tumble down the hill, but before it could sweep us, me at least, off the face of the earth, it began to take shape. It made itself into walls, pillars, steps, a temple, a palace, glimmering white in the full moon light. The roaring ended and all was still again.

“My king,” Rob bowed to me, and swept a graceful hand up towards the top of the steps leading inside.

I walked up and into the snow palace, flakes of powder glittering in the moonlight. You could see what would have been the plaster work in the original, the strange animal heads and fruits decorating the walls, the pillars, all white-on-white but carved just so that the moon’s light and the shadows it created provided the detail that bright-colored paint had given it in the original, now copied in light and shadow reliefs executed by Rob, Barbatos, the master artist.

And there was a throne, a white throne encrusted with frozen snow-gems, pieces of ice melted, reformed, compressed by his power into glittering crystals refracting rainbows of color. I stood there looking at it, even an atheist wondering if lightning would strike me if I sat in it.

“Go ahead. It’s yours.”

I sat down and regarded my palace. The snow was cold on my ass, penetrating my ski pants, my thermals. It was real.

“Okay,” I said, numb in my mind as well as my ass. “Okay.”

“We have to go now,” Rob said. “They heard the avalanche and they’re coming.”

“Okay,” I said, getting up reluctantly. It’s good to be the king, even if only of a snow palace, even if only for a moment.

We walked out, strapped back into our boards, and tore out for the bottom of the hill and the car. I looked back, even as I crazily thought I’d turn into a pillar of salt, or ice, or something, but all there was now behind us was a big ass pile of snow.
