Introduction: I finished Lada Ray’s “The Earth Shifter” three nights ago and it has been on my mind ever since. The characters and plot have stuck with me and I eagerly await the next installment, as things really began to kick off as I flew through the final pages. The book builds slowly and steadily introducing a wide variety of characters, locations and lore which really flesh out this tale of time travel, alternate history and psychic powers, making everything real and believable. It was great fun to watch as multiple, seemingly unconnected, story threads all came together in the end, and although Lada purposefully telegraphs certain plot points, I was often totally thrown for a loop by the twists she has placed throughout!

What It’s About: The basic plot revolves around the concept of Karma and merit, that a time of judgment is coming for humanity. The physical manifestation of this all-cleansing judgment comes in the form of the Comet of Karma. The Comet of Karma is a massive extra terrestrial body that is destined to collide with, and destroy the Earth should humanity remain on it’s cruel, inhumane and destructive trajectory. That’s where the main character Sasha comes in. Without giving too much away Sasha, a Russian girl in her late teens, has special powers. She can read and influence the minds of others, she can travel through time and effect historical events and much more. If humanity is to have any chance at survival, Sasha must learn about her destiny, pass through many hardships and find the other who, like her, has many powers of his own.

I’ve been interested in the Tunguska meteor incident which occurred in 1908 for some time now. It’s a mysterious and fascinating piece of history and so I had a big smile on my face when Lada presented what “really” happened back then. Throughout the book many historical references are made, except unlike our accepted historical versions, there was always powerful and mystical forced behind such events and persons. This is very cool. Lada also manages to pack a lot of geographical, political and historical information throughout the book making it a truly educational experience as well as an entertaining one.

Strong themes present include greed, abuse of power, bullying, cruelty and senseless destruction. These are the elements that have set in motion the gears of Karma, the universe deciding that humanity has failed to find wisdom and enlightenment, and thus shall be purged. There is definitely a strong underlying critique on the way the financial and political world works, it’s not shoved in your face, but it’s there and I for one welcome it. Like many of the great writers, from Swift to Orwell, a healthy dissection of the darker sides of humanity are integral to their work, they ask us to reflect on the world around us and not to take things at face value, but to dig deeper.

Who Should Read It: The Earth Shifter is a young adult, sci fi, adventure. I’m sure it would be extra special reading it if you were a teenager and could closely relate to the protagonists, but as a 27 year old man I still had loads of fun. Very much like say, Harry Potter, it can be enjoyed by all ages. I’d recommend The Earth Shifter to anyone into conspiracy theories and alternate explanations of historical events, also to fans of magic, powers, time travel and mysticism. The book also has strong metaphysical and shamanic elements so I think it would really appeal to those into their mysticism and spirituality as well. The Shamanism is well researched and true to the original shamans of Siberia. The book depicts spiritualist healing sessions of trauma and other ailments that those into holistic and energy/spiritual healing would enjoy a lot.

The Earth Shifter definitely has a very wide appeal, and is a very welcome addition to the young adult market. Hopefully Lada’s series will continue to grow and develop a strong following as it definitely deserves it.

Closing Comments: As you can probably tell I enjoyed The Earth Shifter a lot and I look forward to continuing Sasha’s journey with the next book. The book is well worth checking out if any of the themes appeal to you, and remember you can read a lengthy sample at the e-book store of your choice. Finally as I was reading a book set primarily in Russia about comets striking the Earth what should happen but a comet should strike Russia! That was crazy and gave the book a whole new level of intrigue! All in all I give Lada Ray’s The Earth Shifter 5/5 Stars Check it out and have fun!

‘The Earth Shifter’ takes the reader on a world-enriching spiritual journey filled with drama and excitement! Lada Ray, with her keen intuitive sense, has written another impressive thriller. As in her previous thrillers, ‘Gold Train’ and ‘Stepford USA’, Ms. Ray artfully puts the pieces in place, building the suspense steadily until the reader is fully encompassed. In ‘Gold Train’ we were treated to the mystery of the Tsar’s missing gold. In ‘The Earth Shifter’ we journey back to key moments in Russian history to gain insight into the forces influencing the fate of the Earth today. If you have never been to Russia, let Ms. Ray introduce you to Moscow and Siberia as you have never imagined them. The powerful natural forces of the Russian steppes and the rich historical legacy of Moscow shine in the pages of this thriller providing a unique perspective on the world changes that are taking place around us.

There is an exciting spy component to this book that includes corporate espionage as well as secret government agencies. What do we discover at the top of these stealth organizations? It is not high-tech but rather psychic powers! Remote viewers and shamans are of interest to this power-obsessed community. Will multinational corporations drive the world to a horrible fate, or will spiritual leaders heal the world by using the magic and wisdom of the ancient traditions? Read ‘The Earth Shifter’ and find out!

Lada writes the characters in ‘The Earth Shifter’ beautifully. You will feel the excitement as you experience the joys and frustrations of two families destined to bring forces on opposite sides of the globe together. ‘The Earth Shifter’ has incredible scope. It combines geopolitics, spirituality, cultural depth and, perhaps most of all, the idea that it is the relationships we form, how we treat each other, that is so important to the healing of the planet. I highly recommend this book.

Tolkien move over another Russian has hit the deck running. This is a complex intense inside look into cold war Russia from an insiders point of view. We get to see someone who dearly loves her country and is not afraid to tell it like it is, warts and all, but there is one heck of a lot that we in the Western world have no idea about in this complex exciting panorama, which makes up this fascinating land.
Bringing out in such detail a subject, that most of us had only rumors of, is a whole new adventure in itself. Mind experiments, focusing on people 'seeing', far distances behind enemy lines, inside secret facilities, stealing Top Secret information without actually being there, had been rumored in many circles and finally exposed after the breakup of Soviet Russia. Here is all the drama, not only with Russia but China & the U.S. with more to come in future installments.
One can see that English is not this authors primary language, which in its own way gives it an authenticity that few other writers have. In fact talking to her it is not even a second language which goes to show how talented she really is. The innocence of a new comer to freedom, ideas let alone language is poignant let alone the betrayals, murder that are going on right in her own family and still having the steel within to go on for the last gasp of human life as we know it. This could only be told from a Russians point of view or an immigrant from a brutal dictatorship, that had struggled to survive under harsh realities.
My hats off to you and bow, looking forward as you move forward in what will be a formidable literary career. I give you a 4.9 Star rating based on a few technical items that we discussed. A Must Read !

“The Earth Shifter” by Lada Ray is the first novel in a paranormal YA trilogy about saving the world from its own destruction. The Earth Keepers saved the world from the Comet of Karma in 1908. Now it is coming again and they must decide if the world is still worth saving.

Sasha is a teenage girl living in Moscow who has special talents and is being trained in their use by a Shaman named Tengis. She is one half of the Key that can save the world from the Comet. Kei is a gifted Chinese teenager living in New York. He is the other half of the Key and isn’t aware of his powers or his destiny. Somehow they must find each other.

Ray weaves a complex tale with a great cast of characters. She provides good detail on life in 1990′s Russia, at the end of the Cold War. The descriptions of Moscow and Siberia are rich and detailed. The theme of good versus evil is woven throughout the story. Should mankind be saved from the Comet of Karma. Is humanity worthy of redemption?

This is a great YA thriller that’s sure to please. I think adult readers will enjoy it just as much as the Tweens. Now to wait for Book 2, coming out at the end of the year.

Review by: Jason Collins on Jan. 16, 2013 :
The Earth Shifter by Lada Ray is advertised as an “epic quest,” and it certainly doesn’t disappoint. Ray manages to create a cosmic adventure thriller that will take the reader through history and across continents in an attempt to save all mankind.

The book commences back in 1908, when a secret meeting between a monk and Pope Pius X in the Vatican in 1908. The conversation revolves around a comet on a collision course for earth, threatening global destruction. The two men discuss the impending doom facing the earth, and agree that only the prophetic “Key,” can prevent all but certain annihilation of the planet and its people.

The monk is observed by one of the pope’s guards levitating, and joining the mystic emergency session of Earth's Council, a secret mystical group consisting of the protectors of Earth. The Council of the Earth Keepers agree not to interfere when the Comet of Karma collides with the Earth, so this civilization would reap the consequences of its past, present and future actions. Only under the actions of the “Key,” can Earth and all mankind be saved. The storyline is intriguing and the shadowy characters and secretive meetings brilliantly executed.

The story then switches to modern day Russia, where we meet Sasha, a young Shifter, capable of time travel and reading others minds. Sasha is under aware of her true hidden talents and powers. She is closely guarded and protected by her parents - Olga & Maxim Elfimov, and a Shaman – Tengis.

Sasha and her family are subjected to the observations and manipulations of governmental and non-governmental organisations, but why? What will the consequences be, and why the real interest in Sasha and her family? Sasha finds an alternative world hidden away from ordinary humans with her powers however; this world is equally fraught with as much danger & evil, as love & goodness in modern day earth.

The introduction of two other central characters, Kei & Win, Chinese twins living in New York City’s Chinatown, only serves to add to the carefully crafted mystique surrounding Earth’s faith. What have these two young men, and the sexually attractive female “Red,” got to do with Sasha and Earth’s ultimate faith?

The dark organisations casting their haunting influence in the background from intelligence agencies through to secret societies are fantastically captured. This book contains breath-taking and life costing thrills, deception and espionage at its best.

The plot moves along quickly, introducing each key character and sub-plot with precision timing. There is also the perfect amount of imagery given to set the readers imagination alight with each page.

Who and what is the Key? Will the forces of crime and darkness prevail and can Sasha, Kei and Win realise their destiny? Terror, murder, intrigue, and magic become the course in this wonderful thriller.

The Earth Shifter is an awesome, fast- paced original storyline with exceptional twists that will leave you breathless and wanting more. The book is outstandingly researched and a marvel of creativity. It contains the perfect mix of history, fact, fiction and creative imagination at its best. Simply said, the Earth Shifter is a great read that will leave any reader excited for the next instalment by this very talented author.

Review by: Sofia Siberia on Jan. 13, 2013 :
The Earth Shifter by Lada Ray is a rich cocktail of amazing ingredients with the two core, and most delicious components being, the mystical realm of Lake Baikal in Siberia, as well as the Prophecy of the Key.

With every new chapter I just couldn’t help but admire the versatility of writing. The author covers a wide range of interests from history and legends, to mysticism, prophecy and origins of humanity. There are elements of a spy thriller set against the glamorous backdrop of modern Moscow and New York.

My family is originally from Siberia, and I was mesmerized by the beautiful descriptions of indigenous Siberia, including shamanism, ancient history, Tunguska Meteorite explosion, as well as local village life.

The author Lada Ray is a unique mysterious encyclopedia in herself! Her writing style is inimitable and her esoteric knowledge is impressive!

While reading the book, I just couldn’t help but wonder how one person can possibly know all that!! :)

Let alone the unexpected twists and turns in the narration, amazing flashbacks, stand-out characters and unforgettable settings that all fold into an astonishing kaleidoscope of events and a mystically-integrated message.

Every new chapter is an escalating suspense, and every new piece of information is an introduction to another, even more gripping revelation.

The Earth Shifter will keep you thrilled, intrigued and glued to the next page. You’ll wish you could finish your chores ASAP so you could absorb yourself in reading again.

The book brings modern present and ancient past into a fantastic unity, being prophetic, revealing, casting lights on the shadowy preliminaries and the shifting destinies of humankind.

The Earth Shifter will literally “shift” your consciousness, for, after reading it, the world as you see it will never be the same again!

I'm endlessly happy I discovered Lada Ray’s books and got to know her as a writer!

All the best luck to you, Writer – the Mystery!..

Review by: Paulette Mahurin on Jan. 09, 2013 :
Lada Ray’s The Earth Shifter is the easiest five star reviews I’ve done in a long time, not just from the perspective of the writing but I loved and was captivated by the story right from he beginning. This is an intelligently written story, that draws on remote viewing (I was lucky to be friends with one of the main researchers at Stanford when the studies were under way to attest to the accuracy of the author’s depiction, down to the noting on paper, drawing, what was viewed) along with other very cleverly done metaphysical highlights to make this a very believable story. This author’s writing transports the reader away from a usual reality into possibilities as a backdrop to a story line filled with intrigue as the protagonists, Sarah & Kei are introduced (this part of the trilogy focused primarily on Sarah), in a plot that reads like any great detective story. The writing is beautifully done and draws on exquisite metaphors such as “the rain forest is the earth’s lungs.” Siberia is brought into focus and described as if another character in the story, lending to Mother Earth (& her human inhabitants), as a feature with a life of her own, vividly giving focus of what is to be saved if the story plot is to succeed. The author draws on Russian history and other concepts of a historical nature very effectively.

The characters are many and complicated. The two main protagonists are Sasha, a Russian girl whose parents are well educated and experts in remote viewing, and Kei a Chinese teenager with a twin, Win, who live in New York. Each of their respective families and extended friends feature into the story to create a web of intrigue as Russian evil power players rush against American power seekers. Good versus evil threads through the characters, and human foibles abound, ever present in the “gifted” Shaman and others featured with psychic abilities. The way the author introduces psychic features is also very clever, the Shaman turns into a bear and saves Sasha and her father from a pack of wolves, which may sound fanciful but trust me in the context of this read you won’t be questioning what is real or what is fantasy for the mystery aspect of the story, the parallels with so much of what is happening in the world today, and so many other detailed aspects give believability to this well crafted wonderful story.

My only complaint is that it is a trilogy and I have to wait till the end of 2013 to find out what happens next. This is my first read from author Lada Ray. It won’t be my last. I highly recommend this read for all ages.

Review by: Maddie Walsh on Jan. 08, 2013 :
If you could read just one book this year, seriously consider The Earth Shifter! This metaphysical fantasy/thriller is simply one of the most compelling stories you'll find. Author Lada Ray expertly weaves a tale about the consequences that mankind's insanity has upon the world.

The historical content is fantastic, I've learned a lot. The book is rich with historical references, time traveling flashbacks and exotic locales. The apocalyptic theme addresses probable futures for humanity, depending upon how mankind chooses its fate. The main protagonist is a smart, sassy teenage girl named Sasha. Seemingly living a normal, happy childhood growing up, imbued with special powers beyond her understanding, she has the unenviable task of saving the world! Through many mystical adventures and tribulations, she comes to understand her destiny, along with the daunting responsibility of preserving life so the evolution of human consciousness can continue.

The adventure is all-encompassing and epic in scope, and the author mindfully balances multiple story lines where the characters play a very crucial role in the outcome. Nothing is pre-determined in life, and the future is wide open as the major players fight to bend "reality" according to their will. There are major lessons that we humans need to learn and accept, the defining realization being that we are all connected in some ineffable mysterious way, which may not be apparent to us in the course of our daily existence, but plays a necessary part in the grand scheme of things. I don't want to give away any spoilers, but trust me, you will be thoroughly engrossed with the story! There are many engaging subplots which intertwine and reinforce the central theme of struggle, love, acceptance and transcendence.

My favorite character is Red! Like an enigma within a chinese puzzle box, this vivacious raven haired seductress is amazing. A girl after my own heart, she is pure mystery with her own unique agenda and plays a crucial role in the outcome of the story. Wait until you visit her underground home and the juicy drag racing scene! Don't want to give away any spoilers... you must read for yourself. ;)

The spiritual/ metaphysical message is strong throughout the book, you can really relate with the characters and find yourself rooting for the best possible outcome of the story. It's the ultimate thrill ride, your soul will cry out for justice, cheer, shout out for resolution and redemption. It's that kind of book which elicits the best and worst of humanity, but most importantly reflects our own foibles and struggles with life. Easily a wonderful, thought-provoking book, which I highly recommend to everyone of all ages. It's a real eye-opening, earth-shifting experience for sure!
