Maggie has never been so attracted to a man in her life, but she has learned through experience that men only want one thing. Maggie is delighted that he is willing to take it slow, giving her the time she needs to determine whether or not he is trustworthy.
Before Mac can fully commit to building a relationship with Maggie, he has to solve some problems of his own. His exwife, Carina decides to visit on the same weekend that Maggie plans to move into the rental. Carina tells Mac that Maggie is the birthmother of her sister's adopted daughter, Abby, and that the child’s father was a married man. Mac cannot control his rage when he learns that Maggie is simply another woman with no regard for the sanctity of marriage. He accuses her of being nothing but a liar, a cheat, and a hypocrite.
Later, she warns him that she cannot be anyone’s punching bag and if he verbally abuses her again, she’ll never forgive him. On top of having to deal with Mac, her estranged mother, Claire, is determined to make amends. Claire is the last person Maggie wants to see, so she goes to feed the ducks on the lake.
When she doesn’t return to sister’s house to get her car, however, Mac is the one who searches for her, finds her unconscious, and assumes that she accidentally slipped on her way back to the house and fell down the incline toward the lake.
While Maggie is being examined, the police are notified because the doctors suspect that she was beaten and left for dead; the family is stunned. Kate suspects that the perpetrator has to be Abby’s father, the married man who'd abused Maggie. She tells Mac about Rex Douglas, and he is flabbergasted; the same man mercilessly bullied him and his sister when they were children. Later, Rex’s car is found abandoned outside of Lake Louise, and the police say that since Maggie has no memory of the attack, DNA evidence will be the key to this case.
Maggie is mortified when she learns that Mac knows about her relationship with Rex, but he convinces her that he understands the devastating affects of abuse and that he can help her heal the psychological wounds inflicted their mutual tormentor. But Maggie has not been honest with him and tells him that she has not been intimate with a man since the abuse. Yet, when she thanks him for finding her, she kisses him with such unbridled passion that he is sure of her attraction to him. He is willing to wait as long as she needs him to and convinces her that he is in it for the long haul.
