About Jason Schoonover

Jason Schoonover, Fellow Emeritus and Stefansson Medalist of The Explorers Club, was educated at Vancouver’s Simon Fraser University (English, History) and has been a writer and an ethnologist since the 1970s. As a field collector, his anthropological collections are found in museums around the world, as well as private collections. South and Southeast Asia, including the Himalayas, are his main areas of interest. He has participated in archeaological expeditions on the River Kwai and in northern Saskatchewan; ethnographic expeditions in Sri Lanka and throughout Southeast Asia; was team leader on a 16-person dinosaur bone expedition down Alberta's Red Deer River with renowned paleaontologist Philip Currie; and fixed the opening episode for Les Stroud's BEYOND SURVIVAL in Sri Lanka. A one-time columnist, he’s widely published in newspapers and magazines, and has a further background as an announcer and writer/director/producer in Canadian radio, television and stage. He founded Schoonover Properties in 1975.

He was profiled in Jerry Hopkins’ BANGKOK BABYLON: THE REAL-LIFE EXPLOITS OF BANGKOK'S LEGENDARY EXPATRIATES ARE OFTEN STRANGER THAN WORDS and featured in Maryann Karinch’s BUSINESS LESSONS FROM THE EDGE: LEARN HOW EXTREME ATHLETES USE INTELLIGENT RISK TAKING TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS. He has also been profiled numerous times in newspapers and magazines.

His books, both fiction and non-fiction, are in the adventure field and his first, THAI GOLD, was a Bantam international bestseller.

He and the Imperial Dragon Lady Madame Su Hattori divide their time between Bangkok; Saskatoon, Canada; and the rest of the world. Exploring old Canadian fur trade and exploration routes by canoe is one of their passions.
