The main character, Evgenia, turned down her own career in London, coming back home to Russia to look after her beloved, terminally ill Mother. Fear of losing the most precious person in her life not only helps Evgenia to fight the illness of her Mother – the absence of both cardiac valves, for which doctors don't give permission to do free of charge operation on time, alluding to the patient's age and lack of money… Eugenia manages to prolong her Mother's life for several years due to the extremely expensive medical treatments for which she had been working day and night, completely forgetting about herself, her own life.
Yet, the fear one day to lose her Dearest forever, becomes almost insurmountable obstacle to submissiveness for Eugenia herself. She refuses to become reconciled with inevitability of approaching loss. As one of the readers wrote, "it is extremely devastating to follow the main character's feelings: desperation and sufferings. However, the book itself radiates such a confidence and light that you read it in one breath."
"It is incredibly moving work of literature. The sorrow itself acquires light, tender, bright and warm inspiring tint. The Mother's and daughter's souls are talking to each other using language of Love and Devotion. No allusions for help, for it is always there, as well as the last Mummy's attempt to see a smile on her daughter's face."
