Set in Afghanistan, Ashes and Light tells the story of Khadija, a young Afghan woman who leaves her medical studies behind to help her father after the death of her beloved brother, and Michael, the American she views as her sworn enemy. Their intersecting pasts throw them together when Michael discovers a plot that, if successful, will lead to war between China and America. It’s up to him to put a stop to it, and he can’t do it without Khadija’s help.

I enjoyed this story as much for the exotic setting as for the high adventure the two main characters find themselves sharing. Both are conflicted by guilt and divided loyalties, to the point where I was kept on the edge of my seat right up to the end, wondering if their growing love for each other would be enough in the end.
