My grandparents’ neighbor saw a baby alligator on their porch, and its mother hid in a nearby pond. Due to a drought, the gators got restless. They moved from their homes looking for deeper and cooler water. My grandmother told my mom that she worried about my younger sister and me playing in her yard because my grandparents live near water; it is on three sides of their home. Grandma especially wanted us to be careful near the fishing dock.

My little sister and I were warned about the problem by our mom. When grandma picked me up after school, I wanted to know all about their neighborhood visitor. I needed to understand why the alligator suddenly came to their area and how to keep away from it. I didn’t want to be chomped or eaten. As we drove to her house to play, we talked about how to protect humans from wild things so that we can survive any meeting. My grandmother gave me good ideas.

Grandma says to tell you that, in all her life in this swamp land, she has never been hurt by anything except a wasp; he got caught in her sweater and bit her. She says her ideas should keep you and me safe.

We had fun writing Section 1 of this book or ‘Wild Things in the Mix.’ Thus, we wrote section 2 or ‘My Personal Favorites.’ That part shows you how to keep safe from things that are not wild animals or living things but can still be scary or even harmful. We hope it helps you survive and is fun to read.
