Short description
A cognitive study looking into the sociological and psychological effects of fat admiration, and a cognitive study looking into their behaviour. (Written as a fat admirer myself)
Through the endless coverage on fat through various utilities, such as the media and our personal experiences, we may comfortably presume by having too much body fat on our body is often frowned upon in our pro-thin society.
Suppose, therefore, there was a culture where obesity fantasised and admired about? What if there is an alternative to the societal hostility of fatness, where individuals are smitten with obesity; and gaining weight was not only seen as a good thing – but actively encouraged?
The purpose of this interpretive study, conducted between November 2010 and December 2012, is to highlight and present a better understanding of why society sees fat in the way it does, as well as present an interactional approach of the psycho-social aspects behind the rise of the sub-culture, fat fetishism.
Fat fetishism, or fat admiration, is a culture that rejects the mainstream social norms of what is perceived to be attractive and beautiful sexually, and by using qualitative and quantitative research methods I also, as a fat admirer myself, get a better picture of a culture that seems to be mostly misunderstood with the negative stigma around them.
Its primary objective is to highlight and understand the sexual nature of a fat fetish, and understand how, collectively as a Western society, (hereby known as society for the purpose of this research) interprets fat and on an individual basis how we view having too much weight on our bodies.
I carried this study out by talking to a wide demographic of people for my research – ranging from those in the early teenage years to those in the middle aged demographic, featuring both men and women, since I understood it is likely people of different ages are more likely to experience different experiences, feelings and opinions between genders and age on how they feel about this culture.
The core of this research wants to understand how and why people from different backgrounds feel about their bodies in a particular way, and understand why their involvement, if they are involved, in this admiration community came about.
I also want to offer a comparison against people who don't know or understand about this culture by highlighting the polarisation between individuals who want to become obese and those who want to be very skinny in what is ultimately a sex driven community, through the use of interpretation and interviews.
