Short description
CIA assassin, Dakota, seeks for answers from Vietnam to Bangkok, to Boston and finally, the White Mountains of New Hampshire. He defies God and vows to paint the world in blood. God takes hold of him. He finds Grace in a small Boston church; but then his past catches up with him. Can he save those he loves without resorting to his former savage ways? What sacrifice will he have have to make?
John Carter - Dakota - learned to hunt and fish from an elderly Plains Indian named Ben who gives him an heirloom Bowie knife that has been handed down through the generations of his family. The knife, he says, had been used to hunt, build shelters, and, reputedly, take scalps in battle. The knife becomes a symbol of the man Dakota would become. Hunting with his grandfather, young John kills a bear with his bare hands and the Bowie knife to save his grandfather’s life.
Recruited in college, he becomes a C.I.A. operative and goes to Vietnam as a surgical assassin. The locals call him and his partner, Sting, “Con Ma”, the angry ghost of local legend. They frequent bars and prostitutes, until Dakota meets Su Lee, a pure, untouched Vietnamese girl turned out to the street by her uncle. He rescues her and later marries her, they have a daughter, Su Lynn. He believes he has found “happily-ever-after.” When Saigon falls in 1975 he loses them both. He and Sting barely escape.

Alone with his grief and anger, he expresses his rage and hatred toward God and vows to paint Bangkok, and then the world, in blood. After losing his only friend and partner, he escapes to America. He is determined to save him, but to no avail.
He tracks down his former C.I.A. handler in Boston where he is given a new assignment as an international assassin. Living and working alone, he begins to break down - nightmares, melancholy and depression. One Sunday morning, while out jogging, he stumbles on a storefront Baptist church in South Boston where the pastor lays out the basics of grace and salvation. A few days later, Dakota surrenders himself to Christ.
He fakes his death to be able to quit the C.I.A., changes his name and starts a new life. Years later, he has to face his past without compromising himself or his faith.
Ultimately, the pair end up climbing into the clouds of Mount Washington. Sting, blinded with vengeance and obsessed with killing Dakota, and Dakota unwilling to defend himself, but rather, to lead him away from those he loved and the town that he then called home - to sacrifice himself if necessary.
