About Timothy Nonn

As an activist and ethicist, I have seen many people succumb to the epidemic of despair caused by global crises. The remedy to this despair cannot be found either in passive spirituality or unreflective activism. Contemplative activism – the practice of experiencing the sacred wholeness of being in everyday life and social movements – allows us to confront despair and discover inner resources of hope and compassion so that we can lead more fulfilling lives. This book will appeal to anyone looking for practical ways to sustain their activism and spiritual life in a world suffering from despair, cynicism and indifference.

I have four decades of experience as a national leader in several social movements. I also have a Ph.D. in ethics. Since October 2011, I have worked as an organizer in the Occupy Movement. My background as an activist and academic has created extensive networks of contacts and supporters. My work has been covered in the national media and several books, including Not on Our Watch by Don Cheadle and John Prendergast. I have received awards for my humanitarian work, including the 2007 Charles Shelby Rooks Social Prophet Award from the United Church of Christ. I have published numerous essays, articles, poetry and op-eds.
