This huge novel is said to be one of the finest novels written by Dickens. There are numerous minor characters and various sub-plots in the novel. Owing to the presence of so many minor characters, the novel seems to be complex, but it is always engaging.

Esther Summerson is the heroine of the novel. Esther and an omniscient narrator tell the story in parts.

Tulkinghorn, John Jarndyce, Harold Skimpole, and Richard Carstone are the most memorable of the characters.
