I have read and loved all of the other Alex Cheradon books, but this is a new one, a stand-alone. Marked as #1, it is a new beginning for Alex and Co. If you have read the other books, you will know the sarcastic wit that is Alex. If you are a new reader to Alex Cheradon, you will not need to know anything from the other books and can sit back and enjoy this one. But once you read this book, you probably will want to read more about this time traveling private investigator.
This book seems to be a "set up" book to launch the next books to come. There is not a lot of interaction between anyone but Alex and Time Cop, but this sets the stage for future books. Alex has always had a certain charm for me and his interaction with Time Cop was so much fun to hear--I just love Alex and his sarcastic banter. His former partner, Christian, is always a favorite too, popping up with his bombing craziness. There were some major changes in this book to Alex's friends and their lives, and since I am a long-time reader of Alex and know his background with these people, it changes things a lot in my mind. I will just have to reserve judgment and wait for the next book or books to see what will come from these changes. There was one character in particular that had a major change, which I was very disappointed to see. This character was one of my very favorites and I am hoping that this will work out in future books. I think this is one of the reasons I gave the book 4 stars instead of 5.
Overall, the book was filled with fun Alex dialogue, was a good reboot (as Jason Krumbine put it) and I will just sit tight on the character changes to see what happens in the future for them. I am an Alex fan and will be anxiously awaiting the next book to see what the next chapter of the Cheradon series will bring.
