However, something came in and made the neighborhood change courses. Part of this change is caused by time, the rest by an unexpected phenomenon that psychologically damaged the people within. This highly "non-fictionalized" novel focuses on a sundry of themes. It is a composite novel, following in the footsteps of such classics as Gloria Naylor's The Women of Brewster's Place, Jean Toomer’s, Cane, and Amy Tan’s, The Joy Luck Club; the novel is interconnected through thematic content rather than plot. The themes include beauty, whether it is genuine, lost, or perceived, race, struggle for place, and struggle for identity. Each section deals with volatile racial relations in America, a microscopic view of one neglected neighborhood.
‘Shamelessness?’ and ‘Dark Side’ are incontrovertibly autobiographical. All sketches are literary paintings of historical events concerning the harsh reality of Duggan, of Conroe, of Montgomery County, and of Texas in some form. Similarly, all sketches are derived from experience, based on sight and truth. The sketch ‘Pieces,’ for instance, that opens the novel, deals in part with the spirit world. It is appropriate because Duggan, as a neighborhood and not as a novel, although the novel makes the connection lucid, deals with the idea of the spirit world and the troubling interconnection between spirits and real life. This novel takes a progressive approach, written not only to entertain but to serve as the pedagogy of human or individual rights. Duggan, then focuses on decades of a neighborhood lost and the difficulty in transcending such a dark, filthy, racially-charged, real but mythological place.

There are some powerful stories in here and despite Mr. Flemings take, the book is better than okay if only for the fact it shows the oppressive nature of multiple exterior sources, all centered on an American racism that has never died
