Ebook description

At the end of the Civil War, spirited Ella Swain—daughter of the University of North Carolina president—shocked citizens across the state when she fell in love with and married the Union general whose troops occupied Chapel Hill. Suzy Barile separates fact from lore, drawing on Ella’s never-before-published letters that reveal a love that transcended outrage and scandal.

I may be prejudiced since I heard the author give a presentation about researching and writing the book at a Triangle Area Freelancers meeting. It is essentially a family memoir, but it reads like an engaging novel that just draws you into the story as you learn more about the "characters" and their personalities. She and the publisher did a good job of editing the letters to maintain a narrative flow. I downloaded it as a pdf file to read on my mac, but I may prefer another format. This was my first ebook from Smashwords so I'm still learning.
