About Nicky Charles

Nicky Charles is an independent writer/publisher who became an author quite by accident. She always saw herself as a ‘reader not a writer’ and can thank—or blame, depending on the day—her friend/editor and fellow author, Jan Gordon, for the career she now finds herself immersed in. The tale goes something like this:

In January of 2009, Nicky penned a fanfiction for an old TV series, “Scarecrow and Mrs. King”, and soon became ‘hooked’ on story-telling. She joined a fan-based group for the show and through there met Jan Gordon. It was an idle comment made by Jan during a review of Black Silk (Jan’s newly published book) that inspired Nicky to write her first original story. Over the course of the next two months, she hastily scribbled down a suspense-driven romance entitled Forever In Time and presented it to the world in August of 2009. Soon after, she wrote The Mating, a paranormal romance and followed it up with The Keeping and The Finding. The three stories formed a loose paranormal trilogy called The Law of the Lycans. Nicky continues to expand the Lycan series and has a long list of possible plots waiting in the wings.

Nicky works full-time and writes in her off-hours, few though they may be! In the next few years she hopes to retire from her day job and concentrate more of her energy on her new passion of writing.

When she writes, Nicky sees the story unfolding in her head like a movie and tries to include enough detail so that readers can ‘see’ the story just as she does. The sights, sounds, smells and sensations of a scene are almost as important to her as the actual plot.

Creating main characters that are ‘real’ is also something she strives for. Nicky tries to make each character different, to give them an interesting backstory, to make their actions and feelings logical and to hopefully make the reader actually care what happens to the people in the story.

Nicky lives in Canada and tries to stick to Canadian spelling and punctuation in her work, in support of her country. She is an avid supporter of animal shelters, nature conservancy, food banks and a variety of other charities. Currently she has two ‘inside’ cats and one official ‘outside’ cat though a number of strays seem to take up residence in her garden each year.

When not writing, Nicky enjoys reading – though she often bemoans that she seldom has time for it any more. Her favourite authors are Elizabeth Peters, S.C. Stephen and Cherise Sinclair. She also enjoys spending time out in nature, gardening, taking day trips and eating dark chocolate.

Beautiful as usual. Just wished Damien got his happy ending. I'm glad he figured it out in the end, but I wish Beth never died. He's practically living a half life. Well, beside that, amazing story.

A delightful writer with a grasp on character creation and development of storyline. I could not stop reading until I finished the series. A delicious read, a must follow series. I am housebound with lupus. I am a breast cancer survivor, ovarian cancer survivor and six time stroke survivor. (Laughs chocolate hazel eyes dancing), so when I say I read and write; believe me I do. So I know fun, addictive writing when I read it. Well done.

@Kassi Guerra
The mixed blood issue can be explained thus:

Its only non-magical human blood that dilutes their abilities.

Fae are part of the magical realm, as are Lycans. Off-spring of mixed magical pairings have a full 'helping' of magic in their system and, depending on the dominant genes, they may favour one magical side or the other. Rafe is 3/4 Lycan so he has more Lycan abiities with a dash Fae empathic skills. He didn't get all the Fae skills though:

Quote:
"As only a one-quarter Fae, he lacked the same strong connection (with nature) that a more pure-blooded Fae might have. That was the price he paid for being able to shift."
End quote.

Rafe was climbing in the window naked because he was naked when he initially shifted.

Quote:
"Having had no clothes on when he’d phased into a wolf, he couldn’t ‘think’ clothes back on when he shifted to human."
End quote.

In Nicky Charles' Lycan universe, whatever they are (or aren't) wearing when they shift is what they have on when they return to human state - it helps maintain the balance of energy in the universe.

I have read all of the Lycan series and I LOVE them! I can't wait for Damian's story! I only had one issue and that was w/ this last book, Betrayed. As everyone who has read the series knows, half breeds can't "magic" their clothes back on when they transform from a wolf. In this book Rafe gets caught climbing back into his window naked because he's only part wolf & the writer even tells the background for this, but at the end when he transforms for Eve he transforms back w/ his CLOTHES ON & they have a discussion about this ability. REALLY?!? I'm giving the books a 5 star but I would really like to take a 1/2 a star away for this slip up.

Another great read by Nicky! I'm amazed that she does not charge for her books, just asks for a donation to your local animal shelter or food bank for what you think the book is worth. I have loved this series from the beginning, it gets better and better. Story is written so well, characters, setting, everything is just perfect. Once again Nicky brings us into the Lycan world and those sexy as sin werewolves. There is action, love, lust, sex, friendship, just a whole lot of great things in one place. A definite must read but I would definitely say start with book one, oh so worth it!!!

Review by: Sadie S. Forsythe on March 06, 2013 :
This book twice forced me to reassess my own opinions. I generally am discouraged when a series that has previously been based on a single paranormal species, such as werewolves, starts throwing in other species, such as fae. I've found it to usually indicate that the series is loosing focus, which is rarely a good thing. However, despite my dismal expectations it worked here. Charles managed to introduce a broader paranormal panorama without letting the series loose shape. Kudos. Secondly, I was seriously disappointed when I started reading the book and found that Damian wasn't the main character here. I really like his character and after the teaser at the end of The Keeping I was desperate to know what happens to him. However, having read this book I think it was the right choice not to jump right into his story. It would have felt like too soon, as if we too hadn't mourned Beth enough.

As always the writing was good, the book was well edited, and the sexual tension high. I look forward to following the rest of the Law of the Lycan series.

Although this story is on it's own timeline with Bonded, it still ties in the original cast that started it all. Subtle reminders make you want to start from the begining and read the series as a timeline.

Betrayed: Days of the Rogue by Nicky Charles
Sequel to Bonded
Damien Masterson lost Beth, his blood-bonded mate and unborn baby in a house explosion. It destroyed him. When he learned it was not an accident, he exploded. The ex-Enforcer is now considered a dangerous rogue, also number one on the most wanted list. And a man set on revenge is dangerous.

Eve is just learning that she has Fae abilities. She is empathic and can feel what others feel. She has to get out of the city, away from feeling so many people at once. Eve finds solace in a small cabin she rents. There she enjoys nature and painting. Her landlord isn’t so bad too look at either, if he weren’t so stone faced and rude.

Dr. Rafe McRae is on a sabbatical. He had problems with his last rogue patient and feels like a failure. His new renter is one to keep away from, and it’s not easy. When he realizes she is an empath like himself, he definitely has to stay away. It is rumored that it’s bad for two empaths to connect. Easier said then done when she needs him to protect her.

Nicky Charles has done it again. You never quite know what twists and turns will come next in the book. She lets you in Damien’s mind just enough to keep you guessing if he’s good or bad. You can almost feel the struggle between Rafe and Eve, as magnetism keeps pulling the two together while Rafe fights to keep them apart. Just when you think everything is coming to a head, it veers off in a new direction. Great story.

You absolutely did it again!! Another winner.. This book is well worth the wait. Jan is right there were a couple of parts where I wanted to fast forward... Definitely grittier than the other books in the series but it is ONE of the best yet!! I loved Eve and Rafe and loved that you have cameo of previous characters return!! Loved loved loved this one I did not want it to end! Must read for anyone that have not starred this series you will not regret starting it. You will want more after each book. Thanks Nicky for another wonderful read :-)

I was so sorry to see Damien like that after Beth died, he changed completely although I am glad to see that he still has a conscience. I've always had a bit of a thing for him and I can't wait to read his own story. Nicky, once again you have done it and I thank you.

Darker and grittier than Nicky's previous books. There are some parts where you won't be able to click that page turn button fast enough.

I admit I'm biased, but even though I had to read it for "work" it still held me spellbound on my fourth reading.

Nicky, congratulations on another winner.
