Japanese customs are woven into the story of a death by blowfish murder in New York. Hoshi Sato, a licensed fugu chef is accused when an evil man becomes paralyzed and dies after eating Hoshi's fugu platter. Lieutenant James uncovers many motives, too many, among the people Hoshi knows from his art class. But the real killer is no match for Lt. James' dogged detective work and cunning.
Hoshi Sato trained for many years in Japan to become a licensed fugu chef. He travels to America to follow his dreams of opening a restaurant and finding his childhood sweetheart. His love interest teaches an art class which Hoshi joins and meets a wealthy heiress, a TV journalist, an evil con man, two housewives and an actor, among others. The con man is poisoned by fugu that Hoshi prepared, but Lieutenant James soon finds that almost everyone had a motive to kill the scoundrel. The Yakuza, Japanese Mob appeared to be involved too. When the TV journalist hands over a tape of the murder scene from Hoshi's restaurant, James finds the artistic clue that leads to capturing the murderer.
