The door to the room clattered open, and Maddie looked up in surprise. There in the doorway was the man she’d been following.

“Kiko!” she exclaimed, relieved to see a familiar face. “Thank god you’re here. Where is here, exactly?”

The man didn’t answer, but merely stared at Maddie with utter contempt. He slammed the door shut behind him and moved toward her in the harsh light of the overhead bulb. Maddie felt her heart fluttering against her ribcage. The hateful look in his eye was startling, completely unaccountable. She opened her mouth to demand an explanation, but Kiko covered her lips roughly with a powerful hand. Bringing his face close to hers, he practically snarled, “Don’t speak. Don’t you fucking speak. Just do as I say, or I’ll be forced to kill you.”

Maddie’s blood ran cold with panic. Kiko was not joking. She nodded her head just perceptibly. Kiko’s free hand tangled in her hair, pulling it harshly away from her scalp. She gasped at the sudden pinpricks of pain, but she realized with utter confusion that it wasn’t a gasp of fear, it was a gasp of elation. Am I enjoying this? Maddie asked herself in utter bewilderment. As if in response to her own self reflection, Kiko shoved her roughly away from him back onto the sofa.
