I found the writing pretty mediocre and cheesy, the emotions unconvincing, and the sex unerotic. While I guess it's unfair to criticize erotica for historical accuracy, this story *does* seem to be trying to explain an historical event and includes a historical note, so...well, the depiction of Roman sexual mores is off in numerous ways, and as far as I can tell "morality tribunes" never existed. Also, the violent rape towards the end was something of a surprise, as I was not expecting that from the summary--so if that's a trigger for you, you'll want to give this one a pass.
