This book is powerful. Little's voice comes from a place of pain, and you feel that pain as you read about her experiences as a young person in a small community who does not fit typical gender stereotypes. You also feel a determination and a strength that makes you feel empowered to face your own demons as Little has. It made me feel both sad and hopeful, although the pain from these experiences still exists, it makes her a more powerful person who uses her experiences in supporting other LGBTQ youth. Although I do not share Little's experiences with gender confusion, I can relate to her determination to escape a world of bullying and being told she is not good enough, and I think many readers will as well. I feel privileged for being part of her world for a short time, and I think you will too.
This book is educational in that it demonstrates one person's experiences with gender nonconformity, and it demonstrates the confusion that can arise when children are told they must be a certain way or fit in a certain box and never told that there are alternative ways of being. I hope that youth with similar experiences can read this book and see themselves.
