I did what many people do and that is, I quickly submitted my five eBooks to Amazon and clicked drm thinking I wanted my products Safe and Secure. Little did I know what it really meant.
The next day I heard about Smashwords and read two of Mark Coker's Free books on eBook publishing and marketing.
Mark Coker is very wise and shares my vision and attitudes over paper back publishers. Had I read his material I could have saved myself a lot of money already and I could have published my 5 eBooks here as well. Now I have to wait 90 days and possibly miss out on the promotions and reviews I may be getting.
He is absolutely right. Offer it for free with links inside the book, or offer it free for a limited time.
One eBook "Speaking In Tongues and Other Charismatic Gifts" available only from Amazon at this time I really do want to go viral and as soon as the 90 days are up at Amazon I'll be here at Smashwords; putting my books where I can see another author truly cares.
thanks Mark for your insight

Someday, I'd like to thank Mark Coker, in person, for everything he has done for me. One of the first guides I read prior to publishing my first eBook in March of 2011 was Mr. Coker's free "Style Guide," (How to format, produce and publish an ebook.)
My knowledge and experience in publishing and marketing a book at that time was zip, zero, nada, nothing, and the style guide was a great place to start. I quickly downloaded this book, "Smashwords Book Marketing Guide," and everything else Mark and Smashwords offered.
Since March of 2011, my ebook, "Emergency Laughter" has sold over 17,000 copies and is a TOP 100 bestselling medical humor ebook. I'm sorry to say, that even though virtually none of those sales, were directly through smashwords, the knowledge and techniques I learned here, played a huge roll in my success.
My point is, that it all STARTED with this book and all the other vital information Mark Coker provided, to a then unemployed and broke humor writer. I highly recommend all of his guides. I still use them as a checklist, so I know, all my bases are covered. Thank you Mr. Coker!

This book contains 30 tips for marketng your e-book. Not all tips will be relevant to everyone but there are definitely tips that will be. A lot of the tips could be seen as obvious but then if your not really sure how to go about implementing them, then this book will give you that information. Let's face it - self-publishing can be daunting enough for new authors and marketing can seem like a minefield. This book will help you navigate that minefield.

Everyone's heard of the guy that wrote an overnight best seller. Mark Coker, though, show how reality is far different.
Even for the "overnight sensation" there would have been months/years of toil, doing the small things, pushing their wheel barrow slowly up what seems like an insurmountable hill.
For a first time author like myself, this book was a great introduction into the hard-yards of marketing. I've started a blog, tried to tap into social media and will keep these simple keys in the forefront of my thinking as I tried to peddle my wares.

This book made it very easy for me to re-format my manuscript into a doc required by smashwords, and to understand what happens after uploading. Special thanks for info about how to check the different formats. One thing is missing, though, for me, which is a mention of the behaviour of book-marks and internal hyperlinks: these don't seem to work in HTML or in Java, and in Java even illustrations don't show. Now I must be sitting on edge waiting for what'll be accepted and in which formats. Besides, no apostrophes, quotation marks and the like work in plain text or .rtl either, which we have to be warned about too. But I'll see how it'll pan out. Even then, great many thanks to Mark Coker!

I have read hundreds of internet marketing guides in my day and this one surpasses them all...free and paid!
I found it so helpful as it filled in the blanks for me and tied everything together.
I also liked the fact Mark uses Blogger as a blogging platform. Gosh it's hard to find people who use it. I think Blogger is so simple to use, but no one I knew, knows anything about it.(Thanks so much for that too)
The book has obviously been written with not only marketing your book in mind, but links the publishing platform with the outside world of people who will get your book from "somewhere" online.
Try going into Amazon and finding an awesome guide like this book on how to use their lucky dip!

Thanks for the tips Mark. The book helped a lot but perhaps you may want to revise it as the Ebooks Just Published site appears to have died.

Thanks Mark, you've put together a great book marketing guide.
Some of your tips I have used for years, but HARO was new to me. For those of you that don't know, HARO is a free site that helps reporters and writers find sources --- in other words YOU.
Great tips ... easy to read ... well done ... thanks.

Just like the Style Guide, the Marketing Guide is an invaluable tool for would-be self-publishers. A minimal amount of investment and a modest amount of time can pay big dividends when selling your e-book. Even better, the tips are free for anyone in the Smashwords community to view and use.

As literary artist, it's important to understand the many and various ways to sale books in the 21st century. Coker provides the marketing and promoting information necessary for todays self published authors to take their books sales to the next level through the utilization of e-books. Ofcourse, nothing comes without the hard work put behind it however, it's good know that the steps necessary to get your literary works exposed to the e-book world is only a few tips to follow through on and joining several e-book board communities. Thank you for your wealth of knowledge. In addition I truly appreciate the don't waste your money tip on board circuit press release companies.

Mark's nearly last line was: "Won't you share it with a friend?" Heck, no! I'm keeping it to myself. I was busy looking at other books about marketing and missed the most important one I've seen to date. Thanks, Mark.

Although I haven't even finished my first attempt at an ebook, I find this full of inspiration. In a world where we are able to access anything so easily, it only serves to provide up and coming authors with chances to spread their words even farther across the globe.
Thanks Mark!

I've downloaded this book and the Stylebook for my writers group. The two books provide enough "How-to" to get any writer started with ebooks. I like the straight talk and easy directions provided by these books. I personally use them both.

Mark continues his tour de force of providing the most straightforward guides possible. If you want to thoroughly market your work, this guide is the key. While I knew some of the things that this guide goes over, Mark provides readers/authors with so many new possibilites as well as tips to better utilize the tools I was already using.
A must read.

Excellent!- lots of new ideas- some of which I have already followed up with and more that I will use soon.
I'm also pleased to see that some of my own ideas are confirmed- especially those around using blogging as a promotional tool!
I started my main blog http://oswaldbastable.blogspot.com/
with a view to promoting my book when I finished it. The blog now has taken on a life of it's own and is in the top 50 New Zealand blogs (yes, I know- big frog- small pond!)

This is a great practical guide to promoting your e-book. It includes many tips that are obvious when someone points them out. And some others that I can't wait to try like going on a blog book tour. Wish I had read it before I went headlong into promoting my own one.

Like a stepladder offered a novice bareback horseman, this book readily gave me a leg up, providing useful help at an appropriate (entry) level. Thank you, Mark Coker. (May I call you "Mark"?)
The prospect of editing one's marked-up (npi) html file, returned by Amazon/Kindle, is truly daunting. How does one use those "tags" so fliply mentioned? Equally scary is learning Microsoft Script Editor (Word>Tools>Macros). Don't want to go there.
So thanks again, Mark. How sweet it is to submit one's book in familiar .doc format--and let Meatgrinder do all the work!

I arrived here from a blog post over at Editor Unleashed. Timely indeed, since I am just about finished authoring an ebook, and I've had no clue about how to market the work.
Well, I spent the time reviewing the entire site and decided to sign up. After signing up the first thing I did was read this guide, and I'm so glad I did. The guide is spot-on in terms of the marketing advice. I'm a blogger and the tools that Mark mentions here pertain to a blog site as well, and I know they work.
The writing style is real and conversational. The tips are great.
This HAS to be your first read at Smashwords.

Like all of Mark's works here at smashwords, if you are an independent author then you would be a fool not to read it. I consider myself one of the more successful independent guerilla marketing authors out there, so I am always skeptical that anyone is going to suggest something that I haven't tried or am not presently doing. And yet, I found a few very useful items for marketing myself and my book within the epages of this book.
I highly recommend this for all new writers who are looking to become more well known(who isn't?!).
