I always had no interest in the competitive side of the Martial Arts, my focus is more towards understanding the survival skills of the fighting arts. Where ever I travelled in the world, starting forty years ago, following the stories were always about the famous fighters and their styles styles, but when approached all they wanted to do is show their prowess with tit-for-tat fights. I was more interested in how systems would deal with situations that gave you no choice, but to survive, like facing a group of attackers with weapons. Interestingly nobody I met were short of solutions, but as annoying as the answers were, very few were practical beyond the training floor or the fighting ring. It seemed that I was talking a different language when I mention my interest in skills applicable to survival. I always thought that this was the aim of Martial Arts. Defending yourself first. Think about it, you do not want to be facing off with one attacker when there are several other attackers stalking you from all your blind spots. Dread the thought of a fight on the ground with not escape. Something is seriously missing in the Arts. Wild animals do not have a problem with focusing on survival, knowing one slip up could mean their life. With this in mind, I have spent most of my Martial Arts life promoting survival skills as an alternative to the social fighting way as a better way to learn self defence. To this day it is very hard to believe the world of Martial Arts is still focused on proving that they can fight and beat one fighter even it takes fifteen round in a ring or roll around the floor for over an hour. All these fighters have admiral skills, but not survival skills. As fellow survival minded people have said to me, put a few weapons in the mix and all that shit is out the door
I am really nobody special, accept I spent over forty years immersing myself in understanding survival skills, both mentally and physically. This may not be the best selling pitch, but if you are interested to take your fighting skills beyond the ring: you better be ready to enter a whole new world that Martial Arts can offer. You may hear the talk in the fighting clubs, but that seldom goes beyond sermon. Fighters are programmed to do one thing, like it or not, to fight one to one. Sorry this is not a comprehensive survival approach. If you want to know what survival feels like, try jumping in the deep end and face ten armed attackers aiming to take you out, it is something like facing a pack of wild dogs wanting dinner. You may ask why am I focused on survival, well I was brought up with wild animals where I saw the skills required to survive from the very young animals to the older ones and where death and life fits in. When animals fight, it is general not a good thing to do, injuries are many, only to leave the animal vulnerable to attack from both from predators and their own kind. During my youth my instincts were forged in the same environment, before meeting society’s view, which focused on fighting as a means to injure another person for no reason and referring to it as self-defence skills. This book is designed to refocus exponents on the survival mind that will drive your current skills beyond the status quo of Martial Arts allowing you greater insight to fight off multiple attackers.
