OUR NEW PRIEST
When a new priest comes to an outskirt town in Abuja, lives are changed; some are liberated, some brought down. And it became more interesting when Father Mary-Peter fights battles he least expected in the form of a young woman, an older one and even the feared cult members in town. Father Mary-Peter's origin is also in question. who is he? More
Rita laughed as she walked to the kitchen and rushed back immediately with a stainless plate. ‘Isabella doesn’t care about all the talks and tongue-wagging or gossips,’ she said as she handed her visitor the plate.
‘She is a strong girl,’ Rosemary mumbled in between tasting the ice cream and nodding her approval. ‘You did well.’
‘Thanks.’ She sat beside Rosemary and shared the ice cream with her. ‘I still wonder why she lasted long with this man. He is not going to marry her,’ Rosemary continued, more because she wanted to glean information not because she really cared about the girl’s reputation. Rita licked her plastic spoon and dipped it into the ice cream bowl for more scoop.
‘She understands that very well,’ she said.
‘There’s this new priest in church, and I’ve found myself warming up to him.’ Rosemary smiled gleefully. ‘I like him.’
‘Wait until Isabella comes around; she will give you free tips on how to catch a priest. Me, I specialize on non-Catholic pastors; they are less complicated.’
‘How do you mean?’
Rita grinned. ‘They are not expected to go celibate.’
‘But they are still pastors, men of God,’ Rosemary reasoned.
‘People expect less from them than Reverend Fathers; after all, they get married and if women are seen around them, it does not raise too many eyebrows.’
‘What if they are married?’
Rita shrugged. ‘It still doesn’t make any difference.’
