A frantic team of federal agents and public servants must transport an ecological monster out of the most densely populated region of the United States in the face of a Category Four hurricane and the threat of attack by a secret band of terrorists. Team Leader William Henry, crushed by guilt, desperately seeks redemption. More
Certain Death One is a monster that defies chemical and biological analysis, resulting from one accident after another in the realm of modern sciences - and it is eating through a rail tank car in one of the most densely populated areas in the world, preparing to vomit a cloud of gas so lethal it could destroy all life within fifty miles. A chemical company in the most densely populated area of New Jersey has developed a super acid, a universal solvent, in response to a secret government bid. However, the government wants a substance that is "relatively easy to neutralize" and the solvent quickly explodes that myth. Enter a DNA engineering firm, part of the same corporate family, with an untested "super bug" which they hope will someday solve America's losing war with toxic wastes. They pour the bug into the dangerous solution and, with the help of a fire of unknown origin, the sum of all ecological nightmares is born. Now, a small group of Americans embark on a race against time in the removal and disposal of this horror. Among them are William Jeremiah, former golden boy in CIA covert operations, whose haunted conscience leads him to the brink of a nervous breakdown - and a desperate need for redemption. He is joined by FBI Agent Thomas Jordan, a gifted African American, fighting self-doubt and a simmering rage against an organization he believes betrayed him; Carl Bzynski, an ornery, bigoted recovering alcoholic, who also happens to be the most experienced locomotive engineer in the state; and Hosea Bethea, a timid African American, trying to escape a hopeless future in the deep south by becoming the best soldier he can possibly be, honing skills that may save millions. These four must triumph over natural and human hazards, a force four hurricane bearing down on the coast of New Jersey, and a small band of "political soldiers," which has set out in pursuit of the train with the intention of blowing it up.
