Excellent read. Would also recommend other books by this author (e.g. The Chaos Chronicles - Books 1-4 (and hopefully number 5 in the not too distant future!))

A slightly old-fashioned sci-fi, somewhat in the style of space operas. But, a very good straightforward story which you won't want to stop reading once you start. The title seems to derive from an episode in the story, but the story is about colonisation, conflict between divergent human types, and general political skulduggery. Aliens largely figure as bit players, though a few are subsumed as honorary humans. While character development, etc. are not part of the genre, I especially like Carter's style of self-deprecating and reluctant hero. The other aspect of sci-fi stories I look for are new ideas. Carter's "energy flux" underlying the normal universe permitting faster-than-light travel through the whimsical image of airplanes and sailing ships is most enjoyable and gives some plausibility to FTL. There are even female characters of significance and a touch of sex. What more could anyone want.

This was a very satisfying read with a well constructed universe and characters. It has some very nice plot twists too.

This book is a well written sci fi novel with solid character development and more than enough adventure to keep any reader interested. It was a pleasure to read. Well done Mr. Carver!
