(short story) A traitorous aristocrat must decide which is worse: to live with the consequences of his awful deeds, or take what might be his only chance to redeem himself. More
The First House must survive.
Lord Gebron, head of the First House of the planet New Salem, has betrayed more than his king. He has killed the whole royal family, including the woman he loved, all to make sure the revolution sweeping his world will let his house, and the system that sustains it, live. But as he views the place where his beloved died, he wonders if he can live with the consequences.
Worse yet, he discovers that one family member escaped. Should he kill once more to ensure his plans won't fall apart? Or should he take this opportunity for redemption while he still can?
Lord Gebron's Coup, an early work by Amy Keeley, is a dark tale of politics, desperation, unrequited love, and the desire to placate the ghosts of the past.
