Across London man's best friend is biting and tearing at the hand that feeds it before disappearing into the night. Some-THING has come to the city. It has a presence the dogs can sense, and a powerful influence that the animals can not deny. Extended description

DI Joe Carter is called upon to investigate the deaths of two fellow officers savaged by dogs while pursuing a criminal organisation. The case is quickly taken away from him when it becomes apparent that this is no isolated incident.

Across London man's best friend is biting and tearing at the hand that feeds it and then disappearing into the night. Some-THING has come to the city. It has a presence the dogs can sense, and a powerful influence that the animals can not deny.

The dogs are forming a pack that grows as quickly as the victims it creates; the dead, the injured, and the people the dogs infect with their madness. The government explains it is a mutated strain of rabies and pursues a way of containing and treating it.

Joe Carter believes that is still a criminal case; that amongst the hordes of fatalities there are deliberate victims, that behind the vicious pack of animals is the passion and motive of man. Through his investigation he uncovers signs of scientific experiment... (Read more)

Great book, original twist on an old horror story. I've read 4 of Steve Merrifields books now, HARVVEST, IVORY, THE ROOM and now THE PACK in that order. This is my favorite of them all. The characters were more in depth, the dialog and progression of the story are much better, and the story seemed to flow alot smoother. Also, these characters really seemed to care about each other, something I didn't feel in HARVEST and IVORY especially. I'm looking forward to more adventures from Joe and Andy and the rest. Thanks for another great read Steve!

Just finished this book. I enjoyed it immensely. There is a lot going on in the story with plenty of references to the crime world that I found fascinating and really help the plot roll along. As a fan of Merrifield after reading Harvest and Ivory, I think that this is his best work yet, well worth a read and while your at it check out his other work.

There's a lot going on in this book. The main dog-related plot aside we get insights into police work, police relations, gang crimes, trafficking, and even weirder sides of society's underbelly. Amongst other things. Funnily enough I found some of these side plots more interesting than the main one, but that is just me. Steve Merrifield can certainly write, much better than many established thriller writers I've read lately.

Just finished the book after nearly a month of trying. I have to say, as a big Merrifield fan, The Pack is the weakest of his novels. For me it took forever to get off the ground, story-wise. Seemed like early on it was mostly introducing characters and, as a non-British reader, using police related abbreviations that were never defined and confusing. Once the story reached its climax, it became much better, more like the Merrifield I so loved in Ivory and Harvest. Having loved those books as much as I did, I will certainly read more Merrifield. This book was just a sub-par effort, in my opinion.

Just finished the book, at the expense of days (nights) of undone housework. What a wicked twist! I loved it, loved it. Cannot wait for your next release. The only exception I had to the book is I raise a few bullies, and came close to crying with the Bully scenario. Really, he should have taken him home, Mrs. Moggs is resilient, yeah? Don't stop!
