What would you do if your best friend had a crush on a girl and she treated him as if he didn't exist? And, what would you do if your perfect grade point average was threatened by a science project that partnered you with a boy who had caused you grief since kindergarten?
Well, the Ravensiders—a group of five sixth grade friends with special abilities and different strengths and personalities —solve these problems in a most unusual way and with most unexpected results! They all live on the same street--Ravenside--in a suburb of Minneapolis. Like all other pre-teens, each of the five attend middle school, participate in sports and other extra-curricular activities, and muddle through pre-adolescence. Unlike other students, they carry on a tradition of their respective Guilds. They attend classes to prepare them to use their powers wisely and well and to warn them of the dangers that the Shadow Guilds, their dark counterparts. Sometimes, they make mistakes.
The main characters are Althea, of the Healer's Guild, is shy, loves mysteries, and loves a challenge. She is fond of snakes and the color black; Prudence, whose gift is foretelling the future, is creative, moody, and kind. Of Asian descent, she plays the flute and takes ballet; Lucian is a know-it-all…literally…as she belongs to the Wisdom Guild. She questions incessantly and is prone to deliver detailed lists of facts that no one else is interested in. She plays soccer and collects baseball cards; Warde is of the Guardian Guild and is charming, sensitive, and a diplomat. He is wheelchair-bound and a competition-level archer; and Orenda relates to the magic in nature as his Iroquois name suggests. He is stubborn, practical, and thoughtful. While participating in seasonal sports, "Ned"—as he prefers to be called—also takes ballet.
Plot: Although the Ravensiders have been warned by their ancient Guild teacher, Ms. Basilla (the nick-name her "Ms. Basilisk" after a monster that kills with a look), never to mess around with love spells, they make a love charm for Orenda capture the love of his life, Erica. At the same time, Lucian in secret concocts her own spell--this one to rid her temporarily of her arch nemesis, Jeffrey. Unfortunately, the spells backfire--Erica becomes a pest and Jeffrey disappears entirely. In the end, they all learn that it's better not to meddle with magic without considering the results…until the next time.
