About Nigel & Dot Brown

Dorothy Brown
B.Ed
Diploma to teach children with Specific Learning Difficulties (Dip RSA)

I have had an interest in enhancing and improving the education of students with learning difficulties over thirty five years. I began teaching in the primary sector and developed an interest in the different ways children learned and how their learning could be improved using a variety of techniques and resources. I moved on to the secondary sector and eventually became head of a special education centre which specialised in the education of students with a wide range of special needs which was highly praised by Ofsted inspectors. I became the SENCO of a large secondary school with responsibility of ensuring pupils of all abilities received appropriate support to enable them to reach their full potential. I then became an Assistant Headteacher with a responsibility of developing the provision of learning of all students with SEN including those with specific learning difficulties or dyslexia.

I have been fortunate to work in a variety of primary schools in different parts of the country. In 1978 I was appointed to my first headship of a small village school and moved to take charge of a larger school five years later. We had three successful inspections by Ofsted. In 2004 the inspectors described the school as ‘very good with some outstanding features’. During this time the school became part of a federation and was at the forefront nationally in developing this initiative to raise standards. From the very beginning both schools developed policies which included clear expectations for special needs children and for more able and gifted children. Since retiring I have continued links with schools and teacher training institutions and produced resources for a company specialising in developing maths resources.
