About Vaughn Sherman

Vaughn Sherman was born and raised in the Seattle area, where he attended Roosevelt High School and the University of Washington. His first career was as a fisheries biologist, working in Washington State and Alaska. Following that he spent more than twenty years as an operations officer with the Central Intelligence Agency, most of the time on assignments abroad.
After retirement Vaughn was launched on a variety of community activities, many involved with the governance of nonprofit agencies and community colleges. United Way of Snohomish County included him in a Boardwalk Program that prepared volunteers as trainers for boards of United Way agencies. Through training sessions and retreat leadership he has helped many Snohomish County agencies with governance matters.
Vaughn has been deeply involved with community college education, beginning with a 1981 appointment as a trustee for Edmonds Community College. Since then he has served as President of Washington State’s Trustees Association of Community and Technical Colleges (TACTC), and President of the national Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT). He is a consultant for ACCT, and has made presentations and led retreats for community college boards in all corners of the country.
He has written several articles and two monographs for ACCT and other community college organizations. He has also authored a novel based on his CIA career, Sasha Plotkin’s Deceit, published by Camel Press, and Walking the Board Walk about serving on nonprofit boards of directors, published by Patos Island Press.
A certified mediator, he is a volunteer with the Dispute Resolution Center of Snohomish, Island Counties and Skagit Counties. Vaughn lives in Edmonds with his wife, Jan Lind-Sherman, and with her enjoys a large family spread throughout the Pacific Northwest.
