The world of Elandis is under siege.
For the past fifty cycles, the netherdragon Highlords of the the Imperium have engaged in a genocidal campaign to claim the planets vast resources of magical energy. Against their powerful legions stands a fragile human alliance known simply as The Coalition. Battling with everything they have, including Enchantech weaponry and combat magic honed through decades of conflict, the Coalitions desperate defenders can manage little more than a slow war of attrition. Barring a miracle, it is a war that they cannot hope to win.
Lieutenant Sheryl Lanis, a talented battlemancer in the 33rd Arcane Corps, has a well-deserved reputation for recklessness amongst the soldiers of Falcreek Redoubt. Only her Shiv Team's notable kill record tends to keep her superiors off her back. Suddenly, word arrives that her unit has been inexplicably reassigned to garrison a backwater Redoubt. Fuming over what she sees as a "punishment”, she arrives at the skydocks expecting to find some aging civilian hulk as her ride. But to her surprise, the ship that arrives is, instead, the heavy battlecruiser CAS Adamant. This unexpected development is made only more curious when she learns the identity of the ships captain.
Meanwhile, at Citadel Warrn, far away in the mountains of southern Valdon, the dragon knights of the ancient Order of Balthas are dealing with a potential crisis of their own as their firedrakes suddenly and inexplicably go berserk. The event is perceived by some in the Order as a sign that an ancient prophecy has come to pass - one that, if true, could spell defeat for the Imperium. But not everyone is convinced, and Sir Ryan Gedric, one of the Orders most skilled knights and an avowed skeptic, is dispatched on a secretive mission to discover whether there is any truth to the legends. It is a quest that will prove to test not only his martial skills but his convictions as well. With the help of his drake, Gantros, as well as allies he didn’t know that he had, Ryan eventually finds himself at the abandoned city of Talanford where he will face his most difficult challenge yet.
Aboard the Adamant, which is passing through the region, EDAR operators suddenly detect unidentified Vim spikes in the vicinity of the city ruins. Lanis has her own suspicions regarding the source of the magical disturbances and, sensing an opportunity to make amends for her failure at Falcreek, volunteers her Shiv Team to recon the area. But when she defies orders and engages a pair of Imperium cyberdragons, is she prepared to face the potential cost of vengeance? Her decision may ultimately change the fate of Elandis, if it doesn’t get her killed. Ryan’s intervention in the battle could tip the scales but may also cost him the chance to complete his mission.
Black Clouds sets the Wyrmweaver saga in motion with the force of a high-yield spellshock. High-powered magical combat, flying armored warships and cybernetic dragons go head to head in an epic battle for an entire world. One person could end it all, but will that end mean peace or utter destruction?
