Anja Burkert is a university teacher of English and French at the Karl-Franzens University of Graz, working in the English department and treffpunkt sprachen – Zentrum für Sprache, Plurilingualismus und Fachdidaktik. She holds a PhD in language teaching methodology. She is especially interested in the promotion of learner autonomy and English for Academic Purposes. She joined the committee of the Learner Autonomy Special Interest Group (LASIG) of IATEFL in 2008 as events organiser.
In 1973, Leni Dam took her first steps towards developing learner autonomy with a group of 14-year-old mixed-ability students learning English at a comprehensive school south of Copenhagen. In 1979, she began to combine teaching at school with a job as an educational adviser and in-service teacher trainer at University College, Copenhagen, continuing till she retired in 2006. In 2004, she was awarded an honorary doctorate in pedagogy by Karlstad University, Sweden. Together with Lienhard Legenhausen, University of Münster, Germany, she carried out a longitudinal research project on the linguistic development of learners in an autonomous classroom environments, the LAALE project (Language Acquisition in Autonomous Learning Environments, 1993-1999). Her areas of interest are the development of learner autonomy, differentiated teaching and learning, evaluation and the use of logbooks. In 2009, she became the coordinator of the IATEFL Learner Autonomy Special Interest Group (LASIG). Even though she is now retired, she regularly runs workshops in her areas of interest around the world.
Christian Ludwig is research assistant in the English Department (Applied Linguistics and EFL-Methodology) at the University of Duisburg-Essen. His main areas of interest are learner autonomy and the role of literature in the foreign language classroom with a special interest in graphic novels and intercultural learning. He has been a member of the IATEFL LASIG committee since 2010 and has also published articles in this field.
