While I thought that the actual body of the book, the story, was not a bad read, I did not finish this book. I found that since I had not read the book or followed the blog that the snippets and explanations were intrusive and interrupted the flow of the story for me. I was more interested in the story than the author's work style/habits/process. And to me this product was more for the author to share her personal attributes with the readers than to provide an expedition into the world that she had created on paper.

I read this before the full length book Trevor's Song, which features the same characters, and it instantly drew me in. I liked how the author introduced the stories and snippets with explanations about why she wrote them. The stories are quick and enjoyable to read and provide further depth into the characters from Trevor's Song.

Reading The Demo Tapes is like hanging out with a bunch of friends while they struggle to make a name for themselves in the music business. Gottfried's writing is strong, funny, and always entertaining. Her characters have more depth than some real people that I know!
Originally written as blog posts, these short stories are now organized for our reading pleasure. If you like music and you like to read, this one is perfect for you!

I used to be in the music business, back in the dark recesses of time.
With this collection of short stories, author Susan Helene Gottfried provides an entertaining and accurate description of life on the road, conflicts among band members, and even burgeoning family life. The members of ShapeShifters, Gottfried's fictional band, and their families are drawn with depth and sensitivity.
Very entertaining and highly recommended. I can't wait to read "Demo Tapes (Year 2)."
