About Winfreda Donald

WINFREDA DONALD – (fiction pen-name of Laurie Gilbert)
I have chosen to write fiction in the name of Winfreda Donald.
Winfreda independently e-published Past Imperfect and Present Tense, the first and second books in The Long Shadows Series. The family saga traces the stories of young Freya Dunbar and Alexander Marcou played out in Australia, Scotland, Europe and Africa, against the legacies that World War II laid on both their families. The third novel (Future Hope) is currently being edited. Publication is planned for early in 2014. The fourth story (Tides of Time) is incubating.
Now retired from the paid workforce, Winfreda’s focus is on writing and staying healthy for long enough to tap out the myriad stories itching to escape.
Winfreda’s inspiration for fiction writing comes from interweave of many kinds of experience – as the oldest of a large family – from a life on the move in Australia and the UK – from travels in the UK, Europe, North America and Australia – from working in many nursing roles – as a police wife in Northern Ireland – as a mother – as a small business owner – as a public servant at state and national levels.
Most of all Winfreda is interested in the rich and hidden stories of everyday people’s lives. She feels privileged that her experience provided remarkable opportunities to hear and observe them – happy stories, sad stories, people in danger, exhilarating tales, ambitious exploits, self-sabotage and workplace skulduggery.
Many of the memories in store emerged from quiet times when working as a nurse or reflexologist, often one-on-one, sometimes in groups or workshops, sometimes during reflection or meditation. Others exploded from a lived environment of tension, violence, or the increasing streams of news reports and documentaries of our times.
Winfreda’s writing explores the notion that an existing well-spring of love, courage, resilience and hope will someday be powerful enough to diminish the ills of suspicion, intolerance, misunderstanding, discrimination, aggression, violence, oppression and greed.
Along with writing short stories and the fourth novel (Tides of Time) in the Long Shadows Series Laurie is working on non-fiction she hopes to publish in 2014.
