Theatre of the Mind, Writing and Producing Radio Dramas in the Classroom, provides a venue for students to develop and practice ALL their language skills in the context of projects that motivate them to want to learn. These projects bridge the gap between the media of the eye (television/film) and the media of the mind (reading/writing), developing and encouraging internal visualization skills. Writing and producing radio dramas helps students rediscover the need to create, thereby motivating them to become more involved with reading, writing, speaking, and creating.
The book includes detailed suggestions for writing and producing radio dramas using uncomplicated equipment available in most schools. There is even a section on digital recording and editing sound files on the computer; all the step-by-step processes are illustrated using actual images from Adobe Audition (an audio editing software program).
Though the book is written with middle school through adult classes in mind, many of the ideas, (Reader’s Theatre, writing projects, creating sound effects) are sure to inspire teachers of elementary students to include more performance projects in their classrooms.
