Stories for Shorty: A Collection of Recollections from the Jockey Club 1982-1988 was written by the people who helped make it happen—the bands and the fans who were there—and their memories of what it was like in Newport, Kentucky before “alternative” was alternative. For the uninitated, the notoriety of the late, great Jockey Club brought punk rock to the midwest from all over the U.S. and abroad into the Cincinnati area, including Black Flag, the Ramones, D.O.A., Dead Kennedys, G.B.H., The Damned, Violent Femmes, Hüsker Dü and more.

The Jockey Club also provided a culture of creative thinking and expression in the form of local bands like SS-20, Musical Suicide, the Edge, Human Zoo, BPA, Sluggo, Libertines US, Wolverton Brothers, the Thangs, and the Jockey Club “house band”, the Reduced, just to name a few. Records that were spun with regularity on a variety of independent radio shows on WAIF, most notably the “Search and Destroy” show on Wednesday nights hosted by “Handsome” Clem Carpenter.

It's been over 20 years since the demolition of the legendary Jockey Club, but the memories remain. Those of us who were there helped create "Stories for Shorty" as we remembered it in the 1980s. Everyone from SS-20's Jughead to Joey Shithead of D.O.A. to the Human Zoo himself, Bevo, contributed in not just conveying the importance of The Jockey Club to the Cincinnati, OH music scene but just how much it really meant to us.
